Comparing models
Where each model fits best
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all chat, read files, and build small apps. In this lesson you'll compare them side by side, so you can pick the right one for each job.
Is there a "best" model?
Asking which model is best is like asking which car is best. It depends on the trip. A small car is great in the city. A van is better for moving house. All three assistants are strong, and each one leads in some areas.
- The models get updated often, so rankings change.
- For most beginner tasks, all three do a good job.
- The best choice is often the one whose tools fit your task.
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made by | OpenAI | Anthropic | |
| Known for | All-round helper, many tools | Clear writing, careful reasoning, coding | Research, Google apps, multimodal |
| Build feature | Canvas | Artifacts | Canvas |
| Custom helpers | GPTs | Projects with instructions | Gems |
| Saved instructions | Custom instructions | Project instructions, styles | Gem instructions |
| Long documents | Yes | Yes | Yes |

Choosing the right model
Here are some simple rules of thumb. Treat them as a starting point, not a law.
- ChatGPT when you want a general helper with lots of tools in one place.
- Claude when you need careful writing, long documents, or help with code.
- Gemini when you need research with sources, or you live in Google apps.
Try the same prompt in all three
The best way to learn the differences is to see them yourself. Open ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in three browser tabs. Paste this exact prompt into each one:
I'm a beginner. Build a small single-page "Daily Water Tracker" app I can preview here.
- A big button that adds one glass of water.
- A daily goal of 8 glasses, shown as a progress bar.
- A reset button.
- Friendly design that works on a phone. Then compare the results. Write a few notes for each:
- Did it build a working preview on the first try?
- Which design do you like most?
- How clearly did it explain what it built?
- How easy was it to make one change with a follow-up?
| Model | Worked first try? | Design (1-5) | Easy to change? |
|---------|-------------------|--------------|-----------------|
| ChatGPT | | | |
| Claude | | | |
| Gemini | | | |There's no right answer. Your notes are your own guide for choosing a model later.
Common mistakes
Picking a "favorite" and never switching
Wrong: I only use one model, even when its answer is weak.
Right: If the answer is weak, try the same prompt in another model.Trusting online rankings blindly
Wrong: A blog said model X is the best, so I'll use it for everything.
Right: Test the models on your own task. Your results matter most.- Blaming the model when the prompt is vague. A clearer prompt helps every model.
- Forgetting that features and limits change. Check each app's help pages now and then.

What's next?
You've seen that a clear prompt matters more than the model you pick. Next, you'll learn prompt engineering: how to get the answer you want, the first time.
